A weekend in Venice / Un weekend à Venise

Hi dear friends!
Salut les amis!

Here's a post about our romantic weekend in lovely Venice (Italy).
During our 2 day stay we got to visit Venice under the sun, Venice under the pouring rain and Venice under water (totally flooded)!!!
Great GoPro camera! You do deform my face in a strange way!
As usual a quick video to start off! In this one you can see us struggling trying to walk in mi shin high water! Rather funny I must admit!

So this small weekend adventure started on friday afternoon in the airport of Casablanca Morocco...
As you may have read in my past travels, I'm always having problems at airports. It's not bad luck, it's just that I always tend to be in akward situations (like trying to get a rat on board the plane...)
That friday, I nearly wasn't allowed to leave the country.
They wouldn't let me past customs. Why? Because I have imported a car (with french number plates) into Morocco, and am not supposed to leave the territory without it.
I'm just going to explain the situation quickly because it may come in handy to others (skip if it you just want to see the photos of Venice below)!!

When you import a european registered car into Morocco for starters you can only keep it in the country for 6 months (unless of course you pay the enormous tax to get Moroccan number plates). You are also the only one allowed to drive the car and are not supposed to leave the country without it. Last year there was no problem leaving your car in Morocco while you went elsewhere, because they had no way of checking (or even knowing that you had a car here) when you passed though customs. Well that's changed. Now Moroccan customs have that little box in which they scan your passport. Of course, once scanned the screen tells them that you have a car.

I have a friend who also has a car over here, and has to travel back to France every week. She told me what to do : the customs ask you to fill in a form saying that your car is safely garaged at your house and that no one will drive it and you give them your 'carte grise' (the car's paperwork). I checked that this was I all need with customs at Tangier. They said that it was fine. So we left for Casablanca pretty confident.

We drove the company car to the airport (more than 350km away from our house).
Franck passed customs no problems. As I had been warned, they indeed saw that I had an imported car and told me to go to the customs office. Nothing bad so far. I waited patiently in the office for the officer to finish with the people before me.

My turn. I handed over my papers plus my cars keys. He then asked 'where is the car'. I answered 'in my private garage, like it should be '. His answer wipped my normal smile off my face : ' Sorry, I can't let you pass, your car has to be in the airport carpark'.
I begged, but his answer was alsway no. I wasn't going to go to Italy because of my car? Even worst, because of a problem that I knew about, and had thought sorted out, but turned out hadn't! I explained how the customs in Tangier had told me to leave my car at my house when I was going abroad. His answer was simple : 'well sue Tangier customs! The law is the law'.
I couldn't believe it. I was going to just have to say goodbye to that trip, plus all the money I had put into it (flight + car + hotel). I started to tear up.

Customs let Franck come back to meet me. I had given up hope. He dragged me back to customs office and started talking with the officer. He showed him that I was only going abroad for 2 days.
In the end the guy must have felt sorry for us. He gave me the autorisation to get though customs. What a relief!

La douane a laissé Franck revenir pour me rejoindre. J'avais perdu toute espoir.
Quel soulagement!

Back to story! We arrived in Milan that evening. Just in time for rush hour! We had planned to drive to Venice that night, but seeing all the traffic jams that seemed impossible. We decided to stay the night in a hotel not far from Milan.
Next day we continued our drive.
Le lendemain on a repris tranquillement la route.
After 300km it was time to park the car and catch the ferry over to Venice. It was a cold and wet day! When I left Morocco the temperature was 27°. Here it was 8°!!

We dropped our bags off at the hotel and headed off to a random restaurant to have lunch. Nothing better than some nice italian pasta to warm you up on a cold day!

After lunch we headed off to discover Venice by foot. We basically just wandered around with no precise destination.

Basilique San Giorgio Maggiore
Here you can see St Mark's Square with St Mark's Basilica and the Campanile Tower in the background.

Bel acting as a stupid tourist with the Campanile Tower. We really couldn't be bothered to climb up to the top (we climbed up loads of towers in Croatia this summer and could hardly walk for the following days; will post about that a venture soon!). As we didn't climb up to the top, I though I might swell 'touch the top'!

St Mark's Basilica
That afternoon there was a frightful queue to visit the Basilica, so we decided to put that visit off until the following day.

Instead we went to visit the Doge's palace.
The palace was rebuilt several times. Some of the old parts were exposed in a museum.

The place is enormous!
L'endroit est vraiment énorme!
The golden stairway.
We also visited the inside and many rooms of the palace. No photos were aloud. One of the rooms was huge! The biggest in Europe!
View from the bridge of sighs
La vue du pont des soupirs.
During our visit we crossed the bridge of sighs. It got it's name from  the prisoners who passed through it on their way to the prison cells on the other side would most likely see the beautiful sight of the lagoon and the island of S.Giorgio and freedom for the last time.

After visiting the palace we wandered around again.
During our walk we saw many people wearing welly-boots or plastic things to cover shoes. We found this rather funny, were they scared of getting their feet wet in the little puddles that had formed from the rain?! (The next day we would learn otherwise...)
We then decided to take a tour on the 'vaporetto' along the Grand Canal. The vaporetto is the only was to travel in Venice (as there are no roads). It's sort of like a water bus with stops all along the canal!
By the time we had completed our ride the sun had set. We had a quick wander around to see some of the monuments by night.

St Mark's Square by night

Then it was time for dinner! I tried the local aperitif : Spritz and devoured a pizza.
We slept well at our small hotel. We where however awoken, around 7am, by a loud screaming siren. Woken with quite a shock, I didn't know where I was! I thought we were back in Morocco and wondered what on earth was going on with one of the Mosques (so used being waken up by them)!
We just ignored it and went back to sleep.

Next morning. When we exited the hotel we got a shock! Everywhere was flooded!
That's why people where wearing boots!
I had now idea if this was normal for Venice or not! I was wondering why on earth the travel books don't tell you to bring shoes that you can wear in knee deep water!
We returned to the hotel's reception desk to ask for some help! The guy kindly gave us some dustbin bags to put over our shoes! He also told us that this kind of flooding is rather rare in Venice. This weekend there happened to be very high tides, and the wind and rain made the water rise even more. We also learn that the siren that we heard during the night was to warn people that the water was rising and that flooding was bound to happen.

Dustbin bags over trainers! The new Italian fashion!
Des sacs poubelles sur les chausses! La nouvelle mode italienne peut être!
Flooded streets in Venice.
Toutes les ruelles étaient inondées.
The first part of our walk was ok. Platforms had been put up here and there, and the water wasn't that high...
But as the morning went on the water to higher and higher...and the weren't platforms everywhere!
So we ended up buying some funny plastic shoe-cover things!
Here I was going to do a big 'jump in the puddle' kind of thing. Then my brain kicked in and said 'do you really want to be soaked to the bone with an outdoor temperature of 8°?' Nah!
Nan!!
St Mark's Square flooded! No tourists that morning (except us).
La Place St Mark sous l'eau! Pas beaucoup de touristes ce matin!

We had planned to visit the Basilica that morning but it was flooded to!

So we went off wandering around the town again, discovering new places...
Even the shops were flooded! But still open!
Les magasins étaient inondés aussi! Mais ils sont restés ouverts quand même!
On holiday. A flooded town. Wearing plastic shoe covers. At 9am in the morning. Bel is never without a can of coke zero!

Some cool masks! Shame they were way to expensive...
Des masques vraiment cools! Dommage qu'ils étaient hors de prix!
Here you can see Franck trying to wade desperately though the water to get to dry land! He had a leak in one of his shoes!
On the right side of this pic you can see just how high the water is compared with the canal.
Happy me! No leaks in my boots!
Pour moi tout ça bien! Pas de fuite!

A canal overflowing onto a square.
Well, in the end one of my shoes leaked to and I got a cold wet foot. It was nearly 11am, the tide was at it's highest. In some places the water was nearly up to our knees!
As our plastic shoe covers had not been proven as reliable we decided to take refuge in a bar until the water levels started to go down.

Water level going down!
La marée descend!
At round midday the water levels had gone down enough for us to continue our walkabout. It was pouring with rain though!

We headed back to St Mark's Square to visit the Basillica

The ceiling were all golden mosaics!
Des plafonds de mosaics dorés!
Even the details on the floor where stunning!
Même les détails au sol était impressionnants!
St Mark's Basilica is reallly  piece of art! From top top bottom!

Out of the Basilica and back on St Mark's Square again. I played the silly tourist once again! I wanted to have get a photo with the two columns where you see the two symbols of Venice: St Mark's Lion and the statue of St Theodore (the patron saint of Venice, who keeps watch over the city). As you can see from my face, on this pic I can't stop laughing! Just imagine the scene: I'm standing in the middle of the square with my arms up in the air like an idiot. Franck is trying to get into the right position to take the shot. Suddendly some random guy grabs my hands from behind, saying something in spanish of which i didn't understand much! Nope, not embarrassed at all!

That evening we went and had a great meal! For starters 'coquille st jaques'...
Le soir on a mangé un repas délicieux! En entrée des coquilles saint jaques...
...then pasta with duck and cheese...
...ensuite des pâtes avec du canard...
And to finish a delicious dessert.
Et pour finir un dessert succulent!
For our last night in Venice we went to listen to some music.
The group playing is Interpreti Veneziani.
Wonderful music by very talented musicians!

My photo nearly got photo bombed by a pigeon!
The next morning it was time for us to head back home. Of course, with our luck, that day the sun was shining.
We had an hour or so before catching the ferry back to the mainland, so we took our time walking around.
The Grand Canal under the sun
Waiting for the ferry...

Goodbye Venice! I had a great time (even though we couldn't go for a romantic gondola ride because the water levels were too high!)
Venice is truly a lovely little city!
Back on the mainland we got back in our car and drove to the airport. This time no problems getting on the plane.
We arrived home in Tangier around 2am. I had to be back at the airport at 7am to catch my plane back to France! Not much sleep!

Take care all!
A bientôt!

A new hairstyle and one dead car...

Hi!

Today was not a good day for my car. I ended up getting towed...I really hope that she isn't really dead! I'll talk about that below.

First here's a few photos to show you guys how I've cut my hair!
Let me know what you think!
When I leave my hair loose you really can't see the difference...
A terrible blurry mirror shot to show how it's looks at the back, nothing special there either!

So, the main difference is when I pull my hair into a high pony tail. Yet again on the right side nothing seems to have changed from my original haircut...

Have you managed to guess what I've done?

I've shaved part of it off!!!

Here's what it looks like from the left side!

For me it isn't really a big shock. In my teens I had my hair cut like this for several years (until I was told that I looked terrible and decided to cut it all short).

So why did I suddenly decide to re-shave the underpart of my hair? Well, because it was in really bad condition. During my 5 months road trip in Australia I was living in my Jeep and really didn't have enough space (nor water sometimes) to look after my hair. All the sun, sea water and bleaching really got to it. For some reason it was the hair around my neck that got the most damaged.

Back home I started well treating my hair again (except for bleaching), and most of it is in a nice silky state again. Most of it except for the ones underneath! For the last couple of months that part of my hair has been taunting me by producing mega knots every morning (no idea how I manage to create them during my sleep!)

This morning I woke up with a mega dreadlock at the back of my neck. The kind of thing so knotted that it is impossible to untangle. I though to my self 'well that's it! Even if it's not the fashion I'm going to shave it all off!'
And that's why and how I shaved part of my head.

I am actually really pleased with the result. It's really discreet when my hair is loose (which is great for work; won't scare our clients) and easier to tie back for when I need it out of my eyes (like driving). Plus I think it looks rather feminine. I was a bit scared of what my husband would think (he didn't like the skater-punk style I used to have when we first met) but he actually really likes it!
Do you think it suits me?

OK, now for car issues. Most of you know I have a Jeep over in Morocco. Back here in France I drive my beloved white and pink Ford Escort XR3I. She's 23 years old, named Kirby and I love her!
The old girl has always been a good reliable drive (except for once when driving her down to morocco, funny story you can read here!)

I got back to France last wednesday. Friday I set off to go and see my father. The car went fine for the 300km drive there.

This morning I tried to start her up. When I turned the key I didn't hear the usual buzz of the injectors... (same as the problem I had before). I think she must hate my father's place because it is always here that she won't start!
I fiddled around a bit with the injection relay, and she started fine. I drove her to the shops that morning and back home for lunch with no problems. She started up again fine when it was time for me to go to the hairdresser.

It was when I came out of the hairdresser that problems started. Again, I turned the key, and no injection noise. I fiddled around with the relay, nothing.
I called my sister from the hairdresser's (I don't have a french mobile phone anymore) to come to my rescue.

While waiting I fiddled around with various electrical stuff on the car. I was actually rather calm (I normally get really p*ssed off when my cars break down and I can't find what's wrong).
For one, I was only a couple of km's from my house, which when you break down is reassuring.
For 2, my hairdresser's kids where watching and talking with me (a little boy and really cute little girl). They had been surprised when I  got the back of my hair shaved and really liked the pinkish car. They were even more curious when they learnt that I was from Morocco and more than eager to tell me about the great holidays they had spent in Tunisia!

My sister came to pick me up. The next question was 'what to do now?' This is the second time that my car decides to break down on a saturday afternoon. Over here, no garages are open on saturday afternoons. None except the one in the little village (not even 2000 inhabitants) where my dad lives!

They came and towed my Ford back to their place. We're going to have a closer look at the problem on monday. I hope that it's just something simple and not some big problem! (I brought the car for less than 800 euros so I don't want to put much into repairs but I don't want to sell my little Kirby for scrap metal either!)
Please cross your fingers for the little old car!
Take care all!

Halloween :)

Hey friends!
Salut les amis!

Just a quick post, mainly photos, to share a bit of my Halloween evening with you.

I was so happy that I got the chance to dress up this year! Last year i was working and couldn't come back to France but this year my holidays fell just at the right time.

So after a chaotic weekend in Italy (I'll tell that tale in my next post), and lots of flights, trains and driving I arrived back in France.
It was the evening before halloween.
I still had no idea if anything had been planned for halloween around where I live. My hopes weren't to high, Halloween isn't a big thing in France. Well at least not in the little town where i live (i think there are more cows than people in this rural area of france), i'm sure there must be stuff going on in the big cities. But anyway, my chances of being able to get all dressed up were way higher here than in Morocco.

It was only on the evening of 31st that I found out that a local pub was having a halloween party (one that I used to go to a lot).
I hadn't had time to prepare anything, so I threw on the costume that I had made two years ago and rushed to a friend's house to splash on some very simple white and black makeup! In the end we ended looking like two sort of dead sisters!
It was a great evening! So much fun! I love dressing up and it is the one time of the year that I know that I will be able to wear a costume. I'm so glad that I made it to France on time this year!
C'était vraiment une soirée terrible!! Je me suis tellement amusé!

Well, here are some more photos of our evil ghastly evening!
Alors voici quelques photos de notre soirée maléfique!
My costume that I made two years ago came in handy!
Le costume que j'ai créé il y 2ans m'a bien dépanné!
I don't know exactly what I am supposed to be. Some kind of dead doll! Will do better next year!
Favorite drink: Desperitos. It's basically a mojito but instead of topping with water you top with desperadoes beer! I really shouldn't drink that sort of stuff, I always regret it when i break out in hives the next day!
Us with the Payote Bar team! We have both worked there in the past so where're kind of part of it.
Avec l'équipe du bar la Payote!
Don't we all look lovely!
Qu'est qu'on est mignons!
My crazy friend sitting on one of the pub's tables. I like how the put crosses on each table!
Yet again the crazy dead hooker (he really did look like one!) with more of the pub's decoration.
I think I should have worn a spiderman costume instead! btw, I wore my new sneakers the whole evening; theses shoes are so comfortable! Plus they really increase my height!
In the end we ended up in the local night club. I think we were the only ones wearing costumes, but they're used to seeing us dressed up! The make up stayed on pretty well! I had a hard time getting it of this morning though! (I know, it's bad to sleep with makeup but I was shattered! I did make a nice mess on my black pillow case that is now rather white!)
Hope you guys all had a fun Halloween too!
See you all soon! Next post will be about our 'romatinic' trip to Venice which didn't really turn out as planned!
Take care!

First blog award! :)

I've been given the versatile blogger award by Lara from http://rockteraptor.blogspot.fr
It's my first award and I'm chuffed to bits ! :)
She has a great blog, you should definitely check it out.
So here are the rules:
If you are nominated, you've been awarded the Versatile Blogger award.
Thank the person who gave you this award.
Include a link to their blog.
Next, select 15 blogs/bloggers that you've recently discovered or follow regularly.
Nominate those 15 bloggers for the Versatile Blogger Award with a link to their blog.
Finally, tell the 7 things about yourself.

So, I would like to give the Versatile Blogger award to the following blogs that I like really enjoy reading (there are others, but they have already been nominated):

OK, now for 7 random facts about myself:

1- I was born in the UK, then moved to France when I was ten (I have 2 passports now). I have now been living in Morocco for 2 years and hope to settle down for good in this beautiful country.

2 - My childhood dream was to become a helicopter pilot and I joined the army hoping to fulfill it.

3 - Since I've been a kid I've always loved cars.
Nowadays I own and drive a 23 year old sporty Escort xr3i cabriolet that's pink inside and a Jeep for 4WD.

4 - I have played may different sports and musical instruments, but never achieved a great level in any of them.

5 - I drink about 3 liters of diet coke a day. I know it's bad but I'm hooked on the stuff! I don't like the taste of flat water.

6 - I've been trying to dress 'like a girl' for 3 years now. Before I was always wearing baggy jeans and tank tops.
These are the toilets in my house in France...
7 - I'm a very curious and outgoing person. I love going on adventures, discovering new places and meeting new people.

And there you go!
