Happy Christmas!!!!

Hi everyone!!

Just a really fast post to wish you all a very Merry Christmas! I hope you all have a great time with friends and family. A christmas filled with joy and good spirit. And of course that you receive lots of lovely gifts and presents!! :)
So guys, this post is also a warning that I won't be blogging or commenting for a week or so. I just don't think I'll have time, nor internet connection were I'm off to...

You see, here I'm back in France. We arrived sunday morning at 3am. What a temperature shock! Here it is raining and cold and grey. Saturday midday we were eating outside under the moroccan sun!!
Dropped Hermès off at 'dog-care' (were I know he will be spoilt to bits!)
So, today we will spend xmas eve with Franck's parents, then tomorrow we'll drive 300km to spend xmas day at my dad's place. (Talking about driving, we got the great chance to try out and drive the brand new Clio 4 as a rental car; will blog more about that later!)

So xmas day at my father's, then on the 26th we drive back to Paris to catch a plane at 6am in the morning on the 27th back to Morocco. I literally will have to 'jump' off the plane and run to the port to catch a ferry over to Spain, where I will drive another 200km to pick up my Jeep, and bring her back to Morocco.
A friend went to pick up his car in Spain the other day, and sent me this pic! My Jeep is still being prepared!
Fingers crossed that she'll be ready to drive!
No, no! She better be ready because on the 28th we're heading off to the Sahara desert to spend the new year!
Yep! We're going to spend New Years Eve in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by sand dunes, and maybe an oasis if we're lucky!
I'll try and post some pics, or vlog a bit... just to let people know that I'm still alive...
I'll be back soon!
If there is no news in a months time, send a search party out to look for 2 skeletons in a olive green jeep in the middle of the desert...

Anyway, here's my outfit of the day. Not very christmassy I must admit, but comfy for traveling! (one day I will give up wearing long sleeved t-shirts...I promise...my sense of style will get better...)

Have a wacky christmas and awesome new year!!!

Take care!!

Day trip to Gibraltar : so british!!!

Hi everyone. Hope you all had a good weekend!

As you've probably guessed by the title, I went on a mini trip over to Gibraltar. When the sky is really clear, we can see the big rock stand out over the horizon from our house in Morocco. I've always been curious about this little part of england settled in the south of Spain. I've really been wanting to visit the place for ages now. It's really close to home, but it's been on my 'most wanted places to visit' list. Maybe because just seeing a big rock from a distance is rather intriguing. Maybe because I'm an english born and breed girl and wanted to relive a bit of my english past.

Anyway, this saturday I finally got round to going there.
Saturday morning, an early rise and shine! Out of bed at 5am to catch the ferry to Spain at 7am. There are no ferries that go directly from Tangier to Gibraltar (or maybe just one per month).
During the 1h30 ferry trip we slept.
Arriving in Spain we had no problem finding a taxi at Algeciras port to take us to Gibraltar. It was only about a half hour drive.

As soon as we passed customs we found ourself in England.
English red telephone boxes...
Les cabines téléphoniques rouges...
...old english buses...
...les bus anglais à étage...

Everything reminded me of my childhood country.
Everything except that they drive on the right, like in Spain, and not on left like in England (I was told later that they used to drive on the left, but changed because not being an island made things complicated for people that drove across the border.)

Once you pass customs you have to walk across the airport runway. It's rather peculiar!
When a plane lands or takes off, cars and pedestrians have to stop at a red light. There are about 5 planes a day (all from england). We were lucky to see one land! It's kind of legendary to have to stop at a red light to let a plane pass in front of you!

First thing we decided to do was visit the 'rock'. We decided, that as we were only there for the day, to take a small guided tour instead of walking and discovering things by ourselves. We hopped into a 'tourist taxi' and headed of to the top of the rock.

The 3 flags: Europe, UK and Gibraltar.
Les 3 drapeaux: Europe, Grande Bretagne et Gibraltar.

Gibraltar is a self-governing territory of the UK and as such its citizens are considered british. Gibraltar's government however is democratic and separate from that of the UK.
The rock is rather small, only about 6 sq km, but has a strong independent economy based mainly on shipping, finance, off-shore banking and tourism.
Gibraltar has always been an important 'choke point'. The narrow channel is easy to cut off from other areas, thereby having the ability to 'choke' off transit in times of conflict. Because of this there have often been disagreements about who controls Gibraltar. The UK has controlled the area since 1713, but Spain also claims sovereignty over the area.
It's still a very military area. Lots of parts of the rock area 'military zone' and there is an enormous gun at the top!

At the top of the rock!
Tout en haut du rocher!

The rock is known and one of the Pillars of Hercules. In Antiquity this is how they called the entrance of the straight of Gibraltar. The other 'pillar' is a mountain in Morocco.
It was a cloudy day, but we could just about see africa on the horizon.

The views from up here were great! We could see both sides of the Rock, but also Spain and Morocco.

There aren't many houses on the East side of the rock.

Mainly all the buildings are on the West side.

It was at the top of the rock that we met the monkeys! That's another thing that I was always curious about. Monkeys in Gibraltar!

The first ones we saw were rather busy...
Les premiers qu'on a rencontré était assez occupés...

Then one suddenly jumped onto our car and sat at the window. They are used to being fed by the tour guides.
Our driver gave us some warnings about these cute little guys. 1, do not touch them, they can bite. You can touch them if they touch you, but vice versa they get angry. 2, do not leave anything lying around, they are sneaky little thieves! This one sitting at the window seemed very interested in my bag!
The monkeys that live in Gibraltar aren't in fact monkeys. They don't have a tail, so they are macaques.
The Barbary macaque population in Gibraltar is the only one in the European continent, and unlike that of North Africa, it is thriving (probably because they are well looked after).

About 300 animals in five troops occupy the area of the Upper Rock.

Our guide told us that it was the british that brought the monkeys to Gibraltar as pets. I read other where that the monkeys had been imported to the rock before the british occupation...so I'm not quite sure when nor who actually brought them there.
Today they are very well looked after by the Gibraltar Ornithological and Natural History Society, who give them fresh food and water every day and cure them if they are ill.

The monkeys are not only important to Gibraltar for tourism reasons. There is also a local legend about them.
A popular belief holds that as long as the monkeys live on Gibraltar, the territory will remain under British rule.
In 1942 (during world war 2), after the population dwindled to just 7 monkeys, the British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill ordered their numbers to be replenished immediately from forest fragments in both Morocco and Algeria because of this traditional belief.

Hehe! Me feeding one of the monkeys. You are only allowed to feed them if you are with an official guide. I was a bit scared that the little bugger would bit my hand to get the peanut, but he took it really delicately. So cute!
Hehe! Trop mignon!

Franck got to hold one of them (I decided that it would not be a good idea to have one on my shoulder, as they would probably try to steal my headband or earrings!)
After Franck gave the monkey a peanut, the beast decided to give him a slap! Nice way of saying thank you! ^^

Next visit, St Micheal's cave.
Prochaine visite: la grotte St Micheal.
There are many caves in the rock. This one is one of the most impressive.
I really wasn't expecting to see such massive stalactites!
The cave has been made into an auditorium. Great acoustics!
La grotte à été transformé en auditorium. De très belles acoustiques!

Next stop, the Windsor Galleries.
Ensuite on a visité les Galléries Windsor.
There are about 57km of man made galleries that run inside the rock. The labyrinth of tunnels inside the Rock of Gibraltar known as the Great Siege Tunnels is perhaps the most ingenious defence system devised by man.
The Windsor Gallery was the first to be dug.
At the beginning they didn't intend to mount guns or cannons in the tunnels, but as the digging continued the the fumes from all the blasting nearly suffocated the miners, so they made holes to let the air in. At once they realized that these air vents would be great embrasures for guns.

Then it was time for us to head down from the top of the rock and visit the town (by ourselves).

Here's a picture of the older part of the town. The buildings are victorian style.

The pedestrian shopping area. Gibraltar is Duty Free, so there are loads of shops.

We decided to have a late lunch in an english pub.

Red mail box! :)
Boite à lettres rouge! :)

I hadn't been in an english pub for ages!
There were loads of christmas decorations inside! Over in Morocco there are no decorations as xmas is not celebrated here. Back home it really doesn't feel like xmas is in a week. Over here in Gibraltar it was wonderful to feel a bit of that christmas spirit!

For lunch I couldn't decide what to choose: a traditional greasy english breakfast or fish and chips. I hadn't eaten either for ages.

I finally I went for the english breakfast. Bacon, egg, sausages, backed beans, mushrooms, tomato and fried bread! Greasy but delicious!
Bacon, oeuf, saucisses, haricots, champignons, tomate et pain frit! Très gras mais tellement bon!

While eating, we heard the sound of drums coming towards us...
It was a parade of soldiers in the old english uniform! You really couldn't get more british than that!

The day passed really fast.
Before we knew it it was time to catch the taxi back to Spain, and the ferry back to Morocco. The wind had really picked up, and the sea was rough. The ferry left about 2 hours late (difficulty getting out of the port). During the whole trip the small boat was bobbing up and down and rolling from side to side. I'm lucky not to get sea sick, but trying to walk around the ferry was hard! You find yourself stumbling from one wall to another.

We got home safe and sound. I really enjoyed Gibraltar (more than Spain, but it's probably just because it's english). In the new year we hope to go back there, but for a whole weekend this time and with friends!

When we arrived home we got a shock. A pipe had burst in the bathroom and flooded everywhere!!
He's me trying to get rid of the water!

Take care!
A bientôt!
