80's Fancy Dress Party In England with Silent Disco

Good afternoon (or morning depending where you are in the world) !

I've been a busy little bee this last week. Packing and unpacking bags again!

After having spent a couple of days in France I caught the ferry back to England to go to my cousin's 40th birthday party.
I have missed so many family reunions and parties over the last years, I really had to make it to this one!  I hadn't seen most of my cousins for over 20years!!! Not only would this party be a great way to catch up but it also seemed like it was going to be a lot of fun : it was fancy dress.

I really love fancy dress parties. I love getting my costumes ready and being to wear really wacky clothes and accessories!
The theme was the 80's.

Can you guess how I went as (or tried anyway) ??
I'm supposed to be Cyndi Lauper :)
Girls just wanna have fun ^^

Below are a few pics I took from the ferry coming into Portsmouth
I lived there till I was 9. Seeing the place again brought back so many childhood memories.
One of the many old forts out in the channel

Coming into to Portsmouth!
The tower and the old HMS Warrior ship
(I went to a birthday party on that ship when I was little!)

Another of the old ships : The HMS Victory

Navy boats.

I also drove past Stonehenge
I'm not really into all magical and mystical things, but I've always been curious about Stonehenge.

So now a bit about the party

There were about 50 people there, all in 80's fancy dress. I can't put many photos on here because in general people don't want to be seen on internet :)

Like I had expected it was great.
It was so nice to see all the family again, have a good chat and catch up with everyone.
The food was great; main course was a delicious hog roast!
Poor piggy! Was delicious after having been cooked for 6hours!

Another cool thing was the 'disco system' they had chosen to use : a silent disco

I had heard of this concept for night clubs : people dance to music listened to on wireless headphones. Those with no headphones hear no music, they just see a room full of people dancing to nothing!

I wasn't too sure about this at first, thought that it seemed rather antisocial... but it was quite the opposite.
Whenever you want to chat, you just take your headphones off or turn the volume down, no need to shout like in a normal disco. Plus you can keep the music on full blast until whatever time you want without bothering the neighbors :)

We had 3 different channels to choose from, which is really great too : not everyone likes dancing to the same music!
It was also kind of funny to watch people dance to some kind of music while you're listening to something completely different. Only problem is that you get so carried away dancing that I tended to start singing out loud (like I do in a normal disco)... and I'm not a great singer! ^^

I think silent discos are a must! I will try and get one for my next party!

Now for some of the costumes.
Like I said, everyone was dressed up as 80's characters. It was quite fun trying to guess who everyone was supposed to be!
My two cousins had the most awesome costumes ever!!!
The birthday boy went as a Sand-trouper and his big brother as Dark Vader!
The costumes were perfect, cool laser guns and Dark Vader breathing noise.
I think all guys secretly dream of dressing up in one of these costumes :)

As for me like I said earlier I went as Cydni Lauper
I don't have the same color hair but I've always loved her crazy style, with lots of layers and colors, and great songs.

The sort of embarrassing thing is that I had nearly everything for this flashy colored 80's outfit in my closet!
Only thing I had to buy was some tulle to make a puffy tutu! I was really pleased to be able to wear all my neon colored stuff!
Here's a closeup of the crazy colored makeup :)
Not being very good with make I was rather pleased with the result.
(looked better in real, the camera flash mucked it up a bit!)

So do you think I nailed the Cyndi Lauper look
Do you love fancy dress parties like me or find find them more of a silly embarrassing thing.
And what do you think of the silent disco concept?

Have fun!

  2. Love your outfit! Especially the miss match stockings :) I was kind of confused at first when you said Portsmouth, where I live in Virginia we have a Portsmouth and it has navy ships and an old wooden ship as well. They resemble each other quite a bit!

I know that in the USA there are quite a few towns that have the same name as some in the UK. Funny how as well as having the same name they look alike and have some of the same features!

  7. Hey you have shared some fun photos from 80's Fancy Dress Party In England with Silent Disco. I also attended such an interesting event at the local venues in Los Angeles about a month ago. Our kids also participated in that event and I made DIY outfits for them.
